Valerica Maican (@ana_leanca_music) este Associate Profesor la Royal School of Music in London. Este româncă, pe vremuri a compus muzică pentru Corina Chiriac, acum locuieşte la Washington, dar se gândeşte în continuare la România. Mai exact se gândeşte la femeile care suferă în România, fiind victimele abuzurilor. Compune muzică- va lansa curând un album pentru ele şi îşi doreşte ca mesajul ei să ajungă la victime. Donează bani fundaţiilor care au ca scop lupta împotriva acestui flagel, acum însă, prin activitatea sa artistică, vrea să ridice şi glasul în apărarea lor.

Mai întâi de toate, cum ai ajuns în America şi, mai ales, ce te-a determinat să ajungi acolo?

Am ajuns în USA în 1991 după câţiva ani pe care i-am petrecut în Germania şi Franţa. Eram dornică de o experienţă care să îmi deschidă porţile spre noi orizonturi ale vieţii necunoscute mie.

Cum ai reuşit să ai succes acolo?

La 4 luni după ce m-am stabilit în USA am avut şansa să candidez la un concurs pentru un post de profesor de compoziţie şi pian la Washington Conservatory of Music. Am reuşit să obţin postul şi acesta a fost motivul pentru care m-am stabilit împreună cu familia mea în Washington DC. Încetul cu încetul, datorită succesului pe care îl aveam cu studenţii mei, am reuşit să obţin funcţii deosebite în lumea muzicală: Chairman of J. S. Bach Piano Competition, President of Composition Competition MTNA Washington DC, President of MTNA Composition Competition Eastern Division, etc…

Paralel m-am bucurat de o activitate foarte intensă ca membru al juriului în consiliul de conducere al multor altor competiţii de pian şi compoziţie.

În momentul actual am onoarea de a fi Associate Profesor la Royal School of Music in London. Doi dintre studenţii mei au luat, pentru interpretarea lor, cel mai mare scor din întreaga examinare a anului.

Activitatea şi succesul pe care l-am avut ca profesor, m-a determinat să nu mai compun şi să cânt. Plus că nu doream să fiu în competiţie cu fiul meu Tudor Dominik care a absolvit Juilliard School of Music cu Special Diploma în Compoziţie, Pian şi Dirijat la vârsta de 16 ani, declarat „prodigy” şi care, alături de cele 52 de premii naţionale şi internaţionale, a primit şi Presidential Scholar la Casa Alba.

Ce te-a determinat să scoţi acest album? Care este mesajul lui?

Decizia mea de a scrie muzica din nou a fost determinată de istoria unei prietene foarte apropiate. După 29 de ani de un teribil abuz pe care ea l-a îndurat din partea bărbatul ei, într-o zi l-a prins înşelând-o în casa ei, cu ea în casă! Puţin câte puţin am aflat despre durerea incredibilă a acestei uluitoare femei, de altfel extrem de educată, cu un succes fantastic în domeniul ei şi foarte cunoscută. Când am întrebat-o cu ce pot s-o ajut, mi-a răspuns: “I have been abused in silence, I want to heal loudly “. Povestind istoria vieţii, ei am văzut împreună o cale minunată de a atrage atenţia lumii asupra durerilor şi nedreptăţile prin care trec femeile abuzate. Curând am propus prietenei mele Judy Jamison Dubois, Former Director of Foreign Affaire from State Department, incredibilă jurnalistă şi o fenomenală fiinţă umană să scrie versurile. De asemenea m-am bucurat de cooperarea cu  muzicieni de top.

Împreună am dat naştere albumului pe care îl vom termina foarte curând în care fiecare cântec este o poveste a unei femei abuzate.

Mesajul nostru este simplu, dar profund: Vă auzim! Vă iubim! Nu vom sta pasivi la durerile voastre! Vom lupta pentru voi şi împreună vom vedea lumina de la capătul tunelului.

Cu cât societatea înţelege mai mult că femeia trebuie protejată, respectată, ajutată şi înţeleasă cu atât familia şi societatea vor fi mai sănătoase, productive şi vor avea mai mult succes.

Cum este situaţia în America în ceea ce priveşte femeile abuzate?

În USA, la fiecare 2 secunde şi jumătate, cineva este victima violenţei în familie. Potrivit Liniei Telefonice Naţionale pentru Violenţa în Familie, 24 de persoane pe minut sunt victime ale violurilor, ale violenţei fizice sau sunt urmărite de partener. Asta înseamnă ca mai mult de 12 milioane de femei şi bărbaţi ajung să fie victime ale violenţei domestice pe parcursul unui an.

Cum vrei să ajuţi femeile aflate în situaţii vulnerabile din România?

În primul rând doresc să atrag atenţia tuturor oamenilor asupra acestei plăgi a societăţii. Fiecare femeie este o mamă, o soră, o soţie, o fiinţă umană. Cu cât societatea înţelege mai mult că femeia trebuie protejată, respectată, ajutată şi înţeleasă cu atât familia şi societatea vor fi mai sănătoase, productive şi vor avea mai mult succes.

Sunt o artistă şi dedic acest nou album tuturor femeilor abuzate şi sper ca muzica mea să fie o vie dovadă că noua tuturor ne pasă de ele. Nu contează cine eşti sau ce meserie ai. Contribuie la trezirea naţională şi internaţională asupra acestei probleme uriaşe a societăţii contemporane. De asemenea, cu profundă modestie şi recunostinţă, am reuşit să fac şi continui să fac donaţii importante fundaţiilor şi organizaţiilor care se ocupă de femeile abuzate.

Trecutul tău muzical în România este legat profund de Corina Chiriac… Cum ai colaborat şi ce anume ai compus pentru ea?

Corina Chiriac este o icoana a muzicii si culturii muzicale româneşti. Sunt mai mult decât mândră şi recunoscătoare să o am atât de apropiată prietenă şi colaboratoare. Piesele pe care le-am scris pentru ea si care au avut mult succes la timpul potrivit au fost „Întoarcere” şi „Poţi pleca, dar ai să stai”.

Cum te gândeşti la România de acolo şi ce se spune despre ea?

Vin în România în fiecare an. România este cine suntem eu şi noi, toţi românii, şi avem o datorie a pământului să facem tot ce putem pentru a ajuta şi promova cultura şi valorile româneşti.

Am cunoscut deja în România pe tânărul Anton Alexandru Şerban care este un avocat cu o carieră promiţătoare, cu un suflet nobil si generos. Este un admirator grozav al Ana Leancăi   – http://www.analeanca.com/ – şi un activ susţinător al luptei pentru ajutorul celor abuzate.

România are multe nume în lume: Brâncuşi, Enescu, Nadia Comăneci şi mulţi alţii. America ascultă şi este foarte receptivă la tot ceea ce este bun, frumos şi util societăţii. Românii trebuie doar să se unească şi să promoveze înţelegerea, lupta şi ajutorul necondiţionat pe care pot să-l acorde acestor femei în suferinţă. Voluntariatul şi ajutorul necondiţionat este calea. Doresc mult ca România sa aibă o voce clară şi puternică în această luptă.

MUSIC FOR ABUSED WOMEN

Valerica Maican (@ana_leanca_music) is Associate Professor at Royal School of Music in London. She is Romanian, back in the day she composed music for Corina Chiriac, a famous Romanian singer, now she lives in Washington, but is still thinking about Romania. More precisely she is thinking about the women who are suffering in Romania, victims of abuse. She is composing music – she will soon be launching an album for them and hopes that her message will reach them. She is donating money to foundations that are fighting against this injustice, now though, through her musical project, she wants to use her voice, her platform in their defence.

First of all, how did you get to America, and particularly, what determined you to go there?

I arrived in the USA in 1991, after spending a few years in Germany and France. I wished for an experience that would open my mind up to the new horizons of life, which had been unknown to me up to that point.

How did you manage to become successful there?

Four months after I settled down in the USA, I was offered the chance of candidating in a contest for the job of composition and piano professor at Washington Conservatory of Music. I got the job and that was the reason why I moved with my family to Washington DC. Little by little, owing to the success I experienced with my students, I managed to obtain exceptional positions in the musical world: Chairman of J. S. Bach Piano Competition, President of Composition Competition MTNA Washington DC, President of MTNA Composition Competition Eastern Division, etc…

At the same time, I enjoyed a very intense activity as a member of the jury in the leading council of many other piano and composition competitions.

At present I have the honour of being Associate Profesor la Royal School of Music in London. Two of my students have received, for their interpretation, the greatest score given during the whole examination of the year.

The activity and success I experienced as a professor have determined me to no longer compose and sing. In addition to that, I did not want to compete alongside my son Tudor Dominik who graduated from Juilliard School of Music, with a special diploma in Composition, Piano and Conducting at the age of 16, who was declared a ‘’prodigy’’ and who beside the 52 national and international awards also received a Presidential Scholar at the White House.

What determined you to release this album? What is its message?

My decision to start writing music again was determined by the story of a close friend of mine. After enduring for 29 years terrible abuse at the hands of her husband, she one day caught him cheating on her in her own house, with her being in the house!

I gradually learned about the incredible pain of this extraordinary woman, otherwise extremely educated, with great success in her field and very well known.

When I asked her how I could help her, he responded with: “I have been abused in silence, I want to heal loudly “. By telling me the story of her life we saw a wonderful way for raising awareness regarding the pain and injustices suffered by abused women. Not long after, I made a proposition to my friend Judy Jamison Dubois, Former Director of Foreign Affaire from State Department, an incredible journalist and phenomenal human being, that she should write the lyrics. Moreover, top musicians joined in the project.

Together we created the album that we will complete very soon, in which every song represents a story of an abused woman.

Our message is simple but profound: We hear you! We love you! We won’t stay passive to your pain! We shall fight for you and together we will see the light at the end of the tunnel.

The more society understands that women must be protected, respected, helped and understood, the more families and society will be healthier, more productive and more successful. 

How is the situation in USA as regards abused women?

In USA every 2 seconds and a half somebody is a victim of domestic violence.  According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, 24 persons per minute are victims of rape, physical assault or are being followed by their partner. That means that over 12 million women and men come to be victims of domestic violence, over the course of a year.

How do you intend to help women from Romania who are in vulnerable positions?

First of all, I wish to draw everybody’s attention to this plague of society. Every woman is a mother, a sister, a wife, a human being. The more society understands that women must be protected, respected, helped and understood, the more families and society will be healthier, more productive and more successful.

I am an artist and dedicate this new album to all abused women and hope that my music will count as proof that we all care about them. I doesn’t matter who you are of what your job is. Contribute to national and international awakening concerning this huge problem of contemporary society. Also, with profound modesty and gratefulness I manage to donate and continue to donate significant amounts to foundations and organisations working for abused women.

Your musical past is deeply connected to Corina Chiriac … How did you collaborate and what exactly did you compose for her?

Corina Chiriac is a music icon and a symbol of Romanian musical culture. I am more that proud and grateful that I have her as my close friend and collaborator.  The songs I wrote for her and that were of great success at the time, were ‘’The return’’, and ‘’ We can go but you will stay’’.

What are your thoughts on Romania from far away and what do people say about our country?

I come to Romania every year, Romania is who I am, who we are, all Romanians, and it is our duty to the land to do everything we can in order to help and promote our culture and values.

In Romania I met Anton Alexandru Serban, a young man who is a lawyer with promising career prospects and a noble, generous soul. He is a great admirer of Ana Leanca and an active supporter of the fight to help women.

Romania is known by many personalities in the world: Brâncuşi, Enescu, Nadia Comăneci and many others. America listens and is very receptive to everything good, beautiful and useful to society. Romanian people only need to unite and promote understanding, the fight and unconditional help they can provide to these afflicted women. Volunteering and unconditional support are the way. I truly want Romania to have a clear and powerful voice in this fight.
